Microchipping and Registration

The NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 replaces the Dog Act 1966, it covers cats and dogs.

If your dog or cat was born or aquired after 1 July 1999 it will need to comply with the permanent identification and lifetime registration laws. The animal must first be microchipped at the vet, RSPCA or pet shop. It is an offence to sell an animal that has not been microchipped.

To Register

To register your animal, you can come along to the cashier at council with the microchipping details, a certificate to verify desexing (if you have had your pet desexed) and the registration fee (Council has eftpos and credit card facilities).

Registration fees are as follows:

Undesexed animal          $150

Undesexed animal owned by registered breeder          $40

Desexed animal          $40

Desexed animal owned by a pensioner          $15

These fees are for the lifetime of the animal anywhere in NSW.

Change of Registration Details

It is the responsibilty of the present owner to notify any changes of address or if the animal is sold or given to a new owner. Any changes need to be made on the specific form that is available from Council's customer service counter or the Companion Animals webpage http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/dlg/dlghome/dlg_InformationIndex.asp?areaindex=CA&index=301

Working Dogs

A working dog is described in the legislation as 'a dog used primarily for the purpose of droving, tending, working or protecting stock, and includes a dog being trained as a working dog'.
