Wineries
Orange is the only recoginised wine region that is defined by elevation above sea level and has some of Australia's highest vineyards. Orange wines are from vineyards planted above 600m in the local government areas of Orange, Blayney and Cabonne. Wines below 600m are labelled Central Ranges.
Within these areas there are now 30 cellar doors, over 60 vineyards and almost 2,000 hectares under vine.
Most grape varieties can be grown successfully. Red varieties (mostly Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot) dominate with 55% of total plantings. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are significant as are Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
