Aboriginal Community Plan

Orange Aboriginal Community Plan 2007-2011

This Action Plan was developed by local members of the Orange Aboriginal community to guide future planning for that community. It includes:

  • Community Elders' comments
  • A community vision
  • Issues facing the Orange Aboriginal community
  • The resources available to the Aboriginal community
  • Planning actions, and
  • An implementation strategy

The Plan is realistic and has been undertaken using a process of community empowerment and skilling. The Introduction states in part:

The Aboriginal Community in Orange does not have "one voice" and was not easy to consult. The community includes small
groups and families spread across town, and there are many new arrivals and no simple way of communicating with everyone.

While a number of community meetings have been held there is still a need for more community discussion before this Plan can
be said to be widely supported by "Orange Aboriginal Community".....

This Plan is mainly the work of seven Aboriginal community members [the community consultants] and the Community Working
           Party Executive...

In preparing the Plan, the community consultants interviewed 248 Aboriginal people in Orange in December 2006. This is 39% of
the 2001 Aboriginal population and around 32% of the current estimated popultaion.

There is additional demographic information about the Aboriginal population in Orange in the Orange Community Plan ( see Our Community in this web site) and on the Profile from Census link on our home page.
