Plastic Bag Free July

For a number of years, Orange City Council has supported the 'Plastic Bag Free July' campaign.Plastic Bag in Tree

The challenge is simple.

For Australians to try to refuse single-use plastic during July.

'Single-use' includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging...basically anything that's intended only to be used once and then discarded.

If refusing ALL single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the TOP 4 challenge (plastic bags, bottles takeaway coffee cups & straws).

The campaign began in 2011 in Perth, WA. Since then the initiative has gone global.

Keep CupsDisposable single-use coffee cup

One of the targets of the latest campaign has been a push to encourage cafes and their take-away coffee customers to avoid single-use disposable cups.

The University of Wollongong found more tha 40,000 cups are thrown away every year on its campus and encouraged cafes to use a price discount.

The Responsible Cafes network encourges businesses to pass on the cost of a throwaway cup and a lid to their customers  who use a Keep Cup.\

The 'Bring one, get one tree' campaign linked keep cups with local tree planting efforts.
