Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has paid tribute to former Mayor Ronald John Hill, who died recently.
Ronald John Hill (always known as John Hill), was elected Mayor of Orange in 1963 and served for five years.
Cr Kidd said he had fond memories of the former mayor and teacher and Mr Hill’s passion and commitment to engaging with the community was obvious.
“You can see that by his dedication to education,” Cr Kidd said.
“He was a school teacher and served council well.
“He was wholly committed and genuinely believed in engaging with the community.”
During his time on Orange City Council Mr Hill was passionate about promoting the growth of Orange.
He was great supporter of the Amoco Hall and Wentworth Golf Club both largely built by volunteer labour. He opened both.
Mr Hill worked at many schools in Orange and was the first principal of Calare Public School
Mr Hill was further promoted and moved to Sydney as a principal in of a class one school Riverstone Primary.
He became the executive of the ‘Disadvantaged Grants’ for schools set up under the Whitlam Government. He also served as a relieving inspector of schools.
