Annie is a musical that shares hope amid adversity. The musical, based on the cartoon by Harold Gray, is set in New York City during the Great Depression and follows the story of orphaned Annie.
The First Act begins in Miss Hannigan’s orphanage, where work and minimal care are the norm. Annie thinks that ‘Maybe’ there is hope in finding her parents, whilst for the other orphans it is a ‘Hard Knock Life’. On the streets of the city, Annie believes that ‘Tomorrow’ will bring hope, despite her present circumstances. Whilst looking for her parents she finds herself amongst the homeless in Hooverville, a place resulting from broken electoral promises. Annie is captured by Officer Ward and is returned to the orphanage, where Hannigan laments how her life revolves around ‘Little Girls’. Annie’s fortune improves as Grace, the private secretary of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, choses Annie to spend a week in the mansion. The servants quickly decide, ‘I Think You’re Going to Like it Here’. Meanwhile, Miss Hannigan and her brother, Rooster, and his girlfriend, Lily, ponder what it would be like to live on ‘Easy Street’. Warbucks returns home and after meeting Annie, decides to take her into ‘NYC’ to watch a movie. Warbucks pledges to help Annie find her parents.
