Make Do and Mend Series: Visible Mending
July 1, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm$22.50 – $30
Give your clothes a new life in this visible mending workshop at Orange Regional Museum
Don’t throw out that favourite shirt with its holes and tears! In this 2 hour visible mending workshop you’ll discover creative ways to repair your clothes, breathe life back into your favourite garments and turn your handiwork into a colourful feature. Mending also keeps textiles out of landfill. Using simple hand-stitch techniques, learn how to patch and mend your worn and loved garments.
Illawarra-based visual artist and educator Michele Elliot will be your guide in this workshop.
When: Saturday 18 June- 10am-12pm OR 2pm-4pm
This workshop is suitable for adults and interested young adults. Basic sewing materials will be supplied, including embroidery and sewing thread, needles, scissors and scrap fabrics. To get the most out of the workshop, you are encouraged to bring along:
- your clean torn or holey clothing items in need of repair (jeans, jumpers, shirts, skirts etc),
- any cotton/linen fabric scraps for patching that you have at home
- your sewing kit, if you have one (needles, pins, sewing thread, embroidery thread, scissors).
This workshop also includes an introduction to Orange Regional Museum’s exhibition Inherit: old and new histories. We’ll explore new objects in the exhibition that share a philosophy with visible mending as old objects are given new life through repair and upcycling, including a hessian apron made from repurposed CSR Sugar sacks and a wine press crafted from salvaged spare parts.
This class is a rare opportunity to learn visible mending in the Central West, and we pleased to offer this class at a special price thanks to generous support from the Australian Government’s Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program.
