ORM Talks: The importance of bees in our ecosystem with Dr Megan Halcroft

This image-rich presentation explains how native bees have evolved alongside native plants, and why they are the most effective pollinators within our natural ecosystems. You will be introduced to just a few of the 2,000 species of Australian native bee. Experience the beauty of our usually-overlooked insect pollinators through the eyes of some of Australia’s most passionate nature photographers. Learn how you can help our busy bees drive biodiversity.
Megan Halcroft (PhD) is a conservationist who specialises in native bees. She has harnessed her passion for bees to communicate their importance in ecosystem biodiversity. Megan works with community, Landcare and gardening groups to increase their understanding of native bees and other beneficial insects. She also communicating with rural communities and farmers to help them appreciate how beneficial insect pollinators can improve farm biodiversity and productivity.
Megan’s brand new book will be for sale on the evening: “Bees and other beneficial insects: a pocket-book guide”. Designed to fit in your pocket, this field guide is a simple booklet for people with minimal or basic knowledge of native bees and other beneficial insects. (No cash sales)
Australia is home to over 2,000 species of native bee and Section 1 explains a few of the characteristics that will help you identify some of our more commonly encountered native bees, found throughout Australia. It helps users ID bees to genus and gives some examples of species within these genera. Section 2 highlights a few familiar garden insects and explains what beneficial ecosystem services they provide in your garden. The easy-to-read explanations are accompanied by over 100 beautiful images, demonstrating that “a picture paints a thousand words”.
