Songs for Spring and Summer – Concert Series #3

December 1 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

SUNDAY 1 December 2019: Steel City Sue & WHOA MULE

STEEL CITY SUE is Newcastle singer, fiddle player and songwriter Su Morley. Morley’s fiddle playing has evolved from playing Australian bush music into a sound built from her explorations of the southern-US traditions of Old Time and Cajun music. Her many visits to Louisiana and the Appalachian mountain states have honed her old time, bluesy and melodic style. Her album Boomtown, released in 2018, was recorded with US touring act Truckstop Honeymoon at their Ninth Ward Pickin’ Parlour in Lawrence Kansas USA. It is a collection of songs written in and about the coal country of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and range from rootsy fiddle-driven ones, and the songwriter-folk tracks through to the more electric arrangements. All songs are whimsical, heartfelt, cynical and at times political–a window into a life deeply involved in a real place in time.

WHOA MULE are Kate Baker (vocals, guitar), Miriam Jones (fiddle, guitar, vocals), Naomi Jones (fiddle, banjo, vocals) and Sujata Allan (banjo, fiddle, vocals). The group began playing together at the end of 2016 and since have performed at many festivals across NSW and Victoria. Whoa Mule brings you old time country ballads, original songs delivered with delicious four-part harmony, and driving triple fiddle dance tunes. These musicians give a performance characterised by both space and energy. With rich experience earned in bands such as Catgut and Golden Whistler, Whoa Mule puts a kick into old time music. Songs from their 2018 album “Get Your House In Order” will be a feature of their Orange performance.
