The next phase of the FutureCity upgrade of McNamara Street begins next week as the carpark is resurfaced.
The Council owned section of the McNamara Street carpark (the southern side, closest to The Hive building) will be closed from Wednesday June 2 until Friday June 11.
The hotel Canobolas car park will still be open and can be accessed through the usual routes including Kite Street.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the space had the potential to be used as an entertainment space or a market area.
“The intention is to keep the space as a car park first and foremost but part of the FutureCity project is to look at the areas we have and work out how we can make the most out of those spaces to boost the economy and get people visiting the area,” Cr Kidd said.
“Council is also investigating the use of converted shipping containers in this area for businesses to host pop-up stalls, or cafes, or exhibitions.”
The Council owned car park must be clear of cars by Wednesday June 2 for the work to begin. Council has contacted businesses in the area.
Customers are encouraged to continue to visit businesses in the McNamara Street area while the work is occurring as all businesses will be open as usual.
Weather dependent, work on the carpark is expected to be complete by Friday afternoon June 11.
