The Orange NAIDOC Committee is calling on members of the community to put their hand up to help organise Orange’s annual NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The NAIDOC Committee is a community committee run with the support of Orange City Council.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the committee would like to include anyone who has an interest in helping to organise this annual celebration of First People’s history, culture and achievements.

“Committee members do not have to identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander but we’d really love to see as many First Nation’s people on the committee as possible,” Cr Kidd said.

“This is a community committee run by the community, for the community, and Council provides it with a range of support such as secretariat services, events management and buildings to host meetings and events.

“This is a great opportunity to organise and assist with a range of coordinated activities and to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.”

Committee Chair Gerald Power said he would love to see a range of people express an interest to be on the committee, or to hold officer bearer positions.

“NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. He said.

“New people on community committees bring with them fresh ideas and solutions.

“I encourage anyone who is interested in making the Orange NAIDOC Week a wonderful celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture to apply, or at least give us a call and have a chat about what’s involved.”

National NAIDOC Week is held in July however, the Orange community usually celebrates NAIDOC Week in October due to the routinely cold weather in the middle of the year. Events usually include a street march and community activities in Robertson Park.

Head to Orange City Council’s website for Expression of Interest forms. Expressions of Interest close Thursday, February 4 at midday.
