New rural and industrial land use strategy up for comment

The councils of Blayney, Cabonne and Orange have jointly prepared a draft Subregional Rural and Industrial Land Use Strategy.

The strategy is now on public exhibition for community comment, and the exhibition period will include a face-to-face community information session.

The Strategy seeks to respond to key issues affecting industrial and rural lands.

It aims to protect and promote economic, environmental and landscape values associated with rural land, as well as respond to competing demands for the use of rural land.

The process so far:

An initial briefing workshop was held on 29 July 2019.

A report was then presented to Orange City Council on 7 April 2020. That meeting considered the report and decided to defer for 6 months.

A report was presented to Orange City Council’s Planning and Development Committee on 6 October 2020

That meeting took the decision to go ahead with public exhibition.

The documentation provided contains a brief reference to the (now withdrawn) proposal to rezone prime agricultural land adjoining the Orange Airport. I believe there needs to be a clear indication by Council whether this land is still earmarked for the purpose of future rezoning as industrial or whether it will remain protected under its current status.

This issue represented a clear mandate from the ratepayers of Orange when the current 12 councillors were elected to council. There were clear indications in all forms of local media that there was a considerable amount of opposition to the rezoning and a significant level of community surprise that the Orange City Council had prematurely purchased the land concerned at a cost of over $12,000,000.
