The Seniors Village Hub will hold “It Starts With You”, a dementia-friendly workshop hosted by Dementia Australia on Thursday 9 February as part of the Seniors Festival.

Orange Services Policy Committee Chair, Councillor Mel McDonell, said it was about creating a dementia-friendly community.

‘’Creating a dementia-friendly community is not just about accommodating those who have the condition; it’s about building a society which values and includes everyone, regardless of cognitive ability,‘’ Cr McDonell said.

Dementia impacts close to half a million Australians and almost 1.6 million Australians are involved in their care. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia.

In 2022, there were an estimated 28,800 people with younger onset dementia, expected to rise to 29,350 people by 2028 and 41,250 people by 2058. This can include people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

‘’With so many people impacted, it is vital to clear up some misconceptions about it,’’ Cr McDonell said.

‘’A dementia-friendly community takes the whole community. By gaining knowledge and understanding, we can offer practical support for those living with dementia and their caregivers,’’ Cr McDonell said.

The event will be held on Thursday 9 February from 10am to 11am at the Seniors Village Hub, Nguluway Ngurang, 77 Kite Street. This event is free and morning tea will be provided after the session. Booking is essential. To make a booking, people are invited to call 6393 8600.
