Orange Symphony Orchestra Returns

By

Orange Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with the Colour City Chamber Orchestra presents OSO Returns

1. The Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave), Op. 26 – Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
2. Sketches of Notre Dame – Noel Annett*
3. Sinfonia Concertante in Eb Major for violin, viola and orchestra K364/320d – WA Mozart
4. Symphony no. 6 in F Major, Op. 68 (Pastoral) – Ludwig van Beethoven
*denotes world premiere.

On his first visit to England and Scotland, the 20 year-old Felix Mendelssohn was inspired to write his Hebrides Overture. The music portrays the heaving ocean and is one of the most famous works of his composer – full of wonderful melodies and joy.
Noel Annett, a local Orange musician, teacher and composer, has produced a work specifically for the OSO, entitled Sketches of Notre Dame. The four-movement work takes listeners on a journey from the renaissance through to the modern-day tragedy that struck the iconic cathedral in 2019. In this world premiere performance, Annett’s work comes to life.
WA Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, is written for violin, viola and chamber orchestra. Like Mendelssohn, Mozart was only 23 when he composed this work – a cross between a symphony and a concerto – and he could of course play both parts, though it is said he favoured the viola.
The capstone to the program is the extraordinarily exquisite 6th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven premiered this symphony with himself as the conductor, alongside his 5th symphony, his fourth Piano Concerto, and a raft of other smaller works. Even by nineteenth-century standards, this concert in 1808 was something of an endurance test for the audiences. Presented here alongside Mendelssohn, Mozart and Annett, the program promises to be a lighter affair than its first outing, but no less musically pleasing.

By A Thread

One Fell Swoop presents By A Thread
Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Like the booms and sheets of a sailing ship the performers are hoisted and swung by one another to create striking tableaux and breath-taking dynamics. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect.
By a Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from some of Australia’s best emerging circus artists. With intense training in a breadth of contemporary circus disciplines, the performers have pooled their knowledge and skills, and then exploded the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways.

Pete The Sheep

By

DUE TO THE ONGOING COVID19 SITUATION IN NSW, MONKEY BAA HAVE MADE THE HEARTBREAKING DECISION TO CANCEL THIS PERFORMANCE. TICKET HOLDERS WILL BE CONTACTED DIRECTLY TO OBTAIN A REFUND.

Adapted by Monkey Baa in 2014 from the picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, with foot-tapping music and lyrics by Phil Scott and comedic direction by Jonathan Biggins, Pete the Sheep is a lively and mischievous award-winning musical for young audiences and their adults.

Shaun isn’t like the other Shearers in Shaggy Gully… he’d rather be styling than shearing and instead of ‘sheep-dog’, he has a ‘sheep-sheep’ named Pete. After being rejected by the shearers and their dogs, Shaun and Pete set up their own Shearing Salon in town and before long word is out and they are inundated with woolly clients and maybe a Ringer or two!

This hilarious show, imaginatively told by four performers playing shearers, dogs and sheep explores the challenges and rewards of being an individual and will be a lasting tribute to honoring your own spirit and strength, whilst working with the flock.
